If you have pain in a joint, you may not know which treatment is best. Both ice and heat relieve pain and help reduce swelling.

Ice

Ice therapy can be an efficient and quick solution to relieve knee pain. Apply it after an injury or even before exercise to reduce swelling, inflammation, pain and discomfort in the affected area.
Ice can constrict the blood vessels around the injured area (vasoconstriction), reducing inflammation and pain by restricting blood flow. It can also reduce swelling and help stop the injury from progressing further.
However, ice is not always the best treatment option. It can be harmful if used too frequently or on chronic injuries such as muscle strains or pulls.

Heat increases blood flow to the joint, aiding healing and relieving muscle spasms. It can also relieve pain caused by arthritis or other chronic conditions.
Heat can also be helpful for knee pain caused by high-impact activities such as running or jumping. Applying heat before exercise improves blood flow, lubricates joints, and prepares them for exercise.
Thermotherapy is a safe and effective treatment for osteoarthritis (OA), but more studies with standardized protocols and sufficient numbers of participants are needed to confirm its effectiveness. These studies should look at a variety of symptoms such as swelling, stiffness, and range of motion (ROM), not just pain alone.
