The diamond had several owners and Dutch financier Henry Philip Hope was given the opportunity to bear his second, more famous name. The Hope family decided to sell the stone to Pierre Cartier because they were on the verge of bankruptcy. Cartier was almost desperate to find a buyer for such an expensive ornament when out of nowhere American Evelyn Walsh Macklin appeared. The woman was agnostic, a fan of jazz music and culture, and lived in luxury and champagne.
