2. San Gimignano, Tuscany, Italy
In the third century BC, the Etruscans founded San Gimignano. Originally it was quite a small village, but by the 10th century AD it had developed into a town. The tower residences are the most distinctive feature of this town. Unfortunately, there are currently only 14 of these houses left. At the start there were 72. San Gimignano, the center of all of Italy and especially of Tuscany, is permeated with the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
