When the Hillman Imp was first launched in the 1960s, there were already many opulent sports cars on the road. After the fuel shortages caused by the Suez Crisis in the 1950s, this particular vehicle was introduced because it was more practical and affordable for the working class.

Hillman Imp enjoyed popularity for years before Chrysler began producing comparable cars in the late 1960s. At this point, Hillman Imp sales began to decline.
